Sri Lanka Update – June 2019

And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given us.

Romans 5:5

Dear friends,

Here is an update on the latest in Sri Lanka and all that is coming up for us.

The latest from Sri Lanka:
It is really to much to describe the current circumstances in our nation. We still have more security than usual and there is still much political unrest and people with hardened hearts from the Easter Sunday tragedy. Business’ are suffering and tourism has nearly come to a halt. We pray that we can recover and bring comfort to those who have suffered and find it in our hearts to love even those who were behind the act of terrorism. God is in control we know His will will be done.

Centre Activities:
Despite the circumstances in Sri Lanka our schedule and activities at the centre have been going really well. The kids literally had an extra 3 to 4 weeks from the April holiday due to safety issues in the nation. We also delayed reopening due to precautions and we have boosted security at our Centre. Kids have their bags checked and parents must sign themselves in if they come. We had seen a drop in attendance but things have bumped back up and on a regular week day we have 25 to 30 kids and more on Saturdays. We are thankful and all our classes are going really well and kids are learning a lot. To follow us more closely and see pictures regularly check out our Facebook page called The Bud Centre.

Music class:
Thanks to the teams who were with us this past spring we are excited to be starting a music class for our Centre kids. Its been taught by a professional musician and we offer, key board, drums, and guitar lessons. Its a class that we charge a fee but it is affordable for those who are interested and they will gain a lot of knowledge from it.

Staff:
We have four full time staff and one part time staff who are getting prepared to run the Centre without us and its a big responsibility. Without our staff we could not do what we do. We know they impact the kids who attend the Centre so we ask that you pray for them during this time. We hope that we will have no reason to close doors while we are away. The livelihood of our staff depends on their jobs and not only that; it will just break the good rhythm we have going.

Extention at Kadugannawa:
We have branched out with our Bud Centre activities and every second Saturday we are preparing games, crafts, lessons and activities for around 30 kids in another area not too far from us. These kids are just looking to get involved and the hope is to see them soon in Sunday school and their families in church.

Trip to Canada:
Its now confirmed that we will arrive in Canada August 5th. We will arrive in Edmonton and be there a day or two. Then we make our way to British Colombia to attend my baby brother’s wedding August 17. We plan to be in BC for most of August to spend some valuable time with extended family and connect with a few churches as well.

After the September long weekend we will make our way back to Alberta and begin our visits to all supporting churches in that area. Please get in touch with us to arrange possible dates that will work for us to visit and share all that God been doing in and through our lives and the lives we serve. We very much look forward to spend quality time with all our family, friends and would love to make new connections as well. Email us at nkandangama@paoc.org to set us dates.

Connecting to supporters:

We have plans to visit each and every one of our supporting churches. We have yet to schedule anyone in. We need to pull out our map and make a travel plan and you will soon be hearing from us on when we will be in your area. We also are looking to add new supporters to our already great crew and if there is any opportunity to do so please contact us at nkandangama@paoc.org.

We so look forward to visiting Canada but have a lot of responsibilities to take care of before we do. Please keep us in prayer over these next few months.

  • Prayer as we finish up Pre K and Grade 2 with our girls homeschooling
  • That our staff will be able and willing to take on our responsibilities on top of their own while we are gone
  • That our home and dogs will be well taken care of
  • That all the details of our time in Canada will come together
  • Safety while we travel to Thailand in June for PAOC Retreat and August 4 to Canada
  • For health and protection as we journey
  • Please also pray for Sri Lanka the future is still uncertain as so much has unraveled since Easter Sunday. In God we put our trust who is the author of all things.
