The Power of Identity – Ashley Chance

So many of us identify ourselves by what we do, what we have, or who we know. However, this is not the authentic image God wants us to define ourselves with.

It says in 1 John 3:1 – The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

The reason the world doesn’t recognize who we are is because it does not know Christ and He is the centre of our identity! As a result, it can only produce counterfeits to His perfect identity for us. It is a comforting reminder that we are free from the pressures associated with proving ourselves by our success, image, or material possessions.

There is a scene in the movie The Lion King where Mufasa addresses Simba. Simba has been hiding from his past and his responsibilities as king. Mufasa doesn’t convict Simba of any specific wrongdoing such as: not running away, or of his selfishness. Instead, Mufasa confronts Simba with the state of their relationship. This is such a reflection of how Christ addresses us.

We don’t need to stress out about our past, or prove ourselves with our future. We simply need to press into God, because our identity is defined most truly by our relationship with Him, as Father.

God reminds us who we are; I am a child of God (Gal. 4:6-7) Christ lives in me (Gal. 2:20); I am loved (Rom. 5:8); I am blameless (Rom. 4:25) and God has a purpose for my life (Rom. 8:28) – not because of anything we do, but everything He has done.

I know who I am, because I remember who He is.
